Islands By State

An island in its essence is terrain that remains above the waters it lies within through all times and tides—bigger than a rock, and smaller than a continent. There are roughly 18,000 of these in rivers, lakes and coastal areas representing all fifty states according to the U. S. Geological Survey—although the definition of an island can vary: some islanders insist that causeways and bridges connecting to the mainland are disqualifiers, while others say an island must support at least one tree. There are states that have thousands of islands within their waters (Maine, New York, Florida and Alaska) and states that have fewer than one hundred (Arizona, at 33). Sea stacks in coastal waters aren’t islands; tufas in lakes are also not islands.

Islands are most frequently named for indigenous wildlife, natural features, tribal forebears, explorers or founding families. Redundancies appear nationwide as well as within single states—or even bodies of water. There are multiple Goat, Sand and Strawberry Islands in Washington State, for instance.
